Due the nature of Data Mining, it has to be stated that we would not try to solve causal hypothesis. In the mass data world, we do not need to focus on causality because “we can discover patterns and correlations from data that do not offer new and invaluable perspectives. It might be that correlation do not tell us why something is happening, but they warn that something is happening”(Mayer-Schonberger & Cukier, 2013, p.26). That is why we will propose descriptive research questions for some objectives and correlative hypothesis for others to guide this investigation.
In the first stage of this research, we will focus on describing and modeling the regular functioning of social media in social networks (SO 1). To that end, we will propose the following research questions:
How do internet users/readers of Chilean media in social networks interact with the contents of digital press? What are the media that register the greatest movement of content on Facebook and Twitter? Is it possible to appreciate greater concentrations of consumption in one media rather than in others? What real possibilities of virizalizing contents have alternative and regional media?
For the second stage, it is worth mentioning that, in previous work (Cárcamo & Sáez, 2014), we detected certain stability in leadership regarding presence and interaction of national media in social networks. For instance, comparing quarterly samples from 13 communication media, leadership was kept stable in the first 5 positions, but we do not know if that stability is neither the same comparing daily mobility, nor in the context of citizen mobilizations (SO 2). For that reason, we propose the following hypothesis for the second stage of the research:
Leadership stability of communication media is altered by events related to social mobilizations. Media have to enhance its coverage of those facts that they highlight more than those media that hide citizen actions, no matter the political orientation with which the media relate normally.
Also, visual reception experiments organized with groups of high schools and undergraduate students will be applied in this stage, to collect, based on eyetracking technology, the users’s perceptions when interacting with information from the social networks (Cárcamo, Marcos, Cladellas and Tarrida, PW in evaluation).
Finally, the third stage of this research has a role on scientific educative dissemination (SO 3) which allows for the construction of new knowledge. Once implemented stages 1 and 2, we will orient this research following these research questions for stage 3:
Is it possible to articulate according to the academic curriculum activities of critical reading of social media that contribute with inputs for the new citizens in primary and secondary school contexts? What are the curricular areas that whose corresponding compulsory contents offer a greater potential for curricular implementation?
This project turns to be rather ambitious, as it includes diverse methodological dimensions and requires the multidisplinary work of computing, communication, and education. Accordingly, and considering the work required, this initiative is sought to be completed within 8 academic semesters.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES : To propose a model of analysis based on data mining in social networks as a diagnosis of the behaviors that press media users have in the Chilean internet and project educative uses for such information.
1.-To count the volume of information mobilized by and from a hundred of Chilean communication media to social networks the social networks Facebook and Twitter.
2.-To decide the interactions in social media that appear in contexts of social or citizen mobilizations.
3.- To propose educative mechanisms that allow for the recovery of dialogical dynamics in the net and y use them for citizens’ educations.
